Seniors - The Pardoner's Tale

The first of two tales we will look at from The Canterbury Tales, the Pardoner's Tale, is a morality tale about greed. The Pardoner tells stories of greed to scare people from their money, so that they will give their money to him. He says that "Money is the root of all evil." Do you agree? Disagree? Why?

In my opinion, money is the root of all evil because people sometimes do stupid or illegal deeds just for the accumulation of it. I think money is circulation not accumulation. A person that accumulates more money that anybody else will not satisfy his or her self from all the riches in the world. Only the rich people know how it feels like to be the slaves of their possesions. As a conclusion, all we have to do is to be satisfied with our own things and not buy what we want, but buy what we need.

I do not believe that greed is the source of evil. I think the upbringing of children results in how they act at an older age. The pardoner is only evil because he himself is very greedy. The pardoner himself is also a hypocrite. A rich child that is raised well would not be evil. He would probably be more sophisticated with proper manners.

To the quote 'Money is the root of all evil" I find it that this quote is correct. The reason is that money is the root of all evil is that many people (on matter where) always do dangerous or dumb things in order to obtain money. An example would be a bank robbery, robbers/theif will go to the extreme in order to obtain such wealth and maybe power or fame in a way. However there are some parts to this quote that I do not beleive is true, the reason is that money can me used to help to sick, fund a reseraching diseases, build buildings, public areas, etc. So overall, I beleive that money is half good and half evil, but in other people eyes, it may be that money is one or the other.
This is my opinion, Mr. Jameson tell me what you think.

I don't think that money is the root of all evil. I find that although money does in most cases cause greed, and sometimes envy, to say that "money is the root of all evil" would be saying that every wealthy person has a nasty personality. That is not true. To be honest, every person in this world wants money, how can one surivive without it- we're greedy when it comes to money and envious when we see others more wealthy than ourselves. A poor person can be just as wicked as a wealthy person, and a wealthy person can be just as respectable as a poor person, that was true then and it's true now. Bill Gates donates a large amount of his money to charities, he's obviously a kind, generous, AND wealthy guy. I'm not saying that money doesn't have the opporitunity to turn good people into monsters, because it does, but it can do good as well as bad. For instance, people can go through incredibly stupid ordeals just to get their hands on a bit of cash [theivery, drug dealing, ext], but money doesn't make people do that -- they are driven by the money, but they chose to do those sort of things by themselves.. The kind of people who do that would put the money to bad use, but those who work for their money can actually use it for better causes, like donating to the poor, the sick, or the handicapped, although that doesn't always happen. It doesn't happen because, again, money puts greed in our hearts, in everybody's hearts, and the money we earn is normally greedily kept to ourselves, however, I still believe that money is NOT the root of ALL evil.

Akk. Sorry it's so long, I didn't realize that while I was typing =/

I don't think money is the root of all evil, but in a way it is... yeah its true that money makes people greedy, but not all rich people are like this. It depends on how the people use it. People just take advantage of it to get what they want, thats why other people think that their evil in some way. The evil starts not in money but on peer pressure.People spend their money like how other people spend theirs. Thats means that evil comes from people not on money, i think. what Im saying is that people are really jealous sometimes so they make money as an instrument to show that they are better than other....

In my thought it isn't, cuz human is a greedy animal. Once u tasted how sweet money is, u will never stop wanting more and more.
Money is not the root of all evil, the real evil is "HUMAN'S GREED"!!

btw Mr. Jameson is the coolest teacher ever

Like what u saying...the money cant do anything..but ..the person will use money to do something.i also agree with eric's opinion.People's greed is the root of evil.Today, there's a lot people kill someone just for the money eventhough the person who is they loves.Or they do kind of like bad thing.what make this happen? just because they wanna money. They all think moeny is the most important in this world.Nothing else in their mind,ONLY MONEY!!
The most evil isnt money, is people mind, peoples greed!!

the thing that most people shold be asking is not wether money is evil, wether that intention is evil. WHY DO YOU WANT THAT MONEY SO BAD? if the answer is (in essence, not at face) good, then the matter of getting it (legaly or otherwise) sholdn't even enter the matter.

on the level of the pardener to says that money is evil. you would have to be a fool to believe that crap. and then to hand over your money, AND YOUR STARVING, for that person I hope there is a heaven, because that fool must be living in hell.

Reading all the posts here, I've noticed that people have still made the common mistake of misquoting the phrase "money is the root of all evil". The phrase, which is actually rooted in biblical times, is actually more along the lines of "The love of money is the root of all evil.

Money itself isn't a bad thing. It holds meaning and importance to everyone in some way shape or form. Money can be used to do quite positive things as well as negitive things. It can buy you the essential things that you need in life along with things that you don't. It isn't the money that is evil, but the love of money that is.

Money is the striving force in our capitalistic society. We go to work every day to get money. We go to school in the hopes that our education will get us more money, but there's nothing wrong with that. There's nothing wrong with wanting money to create a better life for yourself and your family. It's what we're supposed to do. But when that want becomes to strong it turns into greed. Greed is among the most ugliest of sin. It describes a state that is extreme and excessive and over endulgent.

The people that commit crimes have the greenest greed. The reason most crimes are commited is because of the pursuit of money in ways that are misleading, harmful and destructive. People that don't want to get a legitamate job, but still want the benifits of having one enlist themselves into lives of crime. The reason for this is almost unarguably greed. Why earn an honest days work when you could make 3 times that sleeping with 3 men off the street? Why work at MC Donalds when you could sell marajuana and have a constant steady flow of money comming in? When criminals want to stop doing what they do to earn quick cash, they usually can't because of greed. Because they'd make more money through crime than they would with an honest days pay. Greed keeps these crimes in a constant cycle that will never end.

The love of money is the root of all evils. A person that appreciates and cherishes the value of money and what it represents will be prone to evil, but a person that is constantly lusting after money will do anything to get it. Including destroying thier morals.

I disagree with the Pardoner, who believes that money is the root of all evil. Money can give people a luxurious life- somting everyone wants. Becuase of the common goal to become rich is so popular in society, money is hard to earn. This leads a person to be greedy and unethical, such as the pardoner. Therefore, becuase the value of money is so desirable and valuable, people and their greed are the "root of all evil".
